EDITORIAL:

Editor’s Report for the Journal of Dental Research, 2007
Anthony J. (Tony) Smith
The Editor presents the state of the JDR through 2007.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 5-7. [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Is Artificial Fluoride Absorbed to the Same Extent as Natural Fluoride?
Trevor Sheldon, Stephen T. Holgate, I.N. Steen, A. Maguire, P.J. Moynihan, F.V. Zohoori, and J.C. Mathers
J Dent Res 2008 87: 8. [Full Text] [PDF]

DISCOVERY!:

Sphingomyelin Degradation is a Key Factor in Dentin and Bone Mineralization: Lessons from the fro/fro Mouse
M. Goldberg, S. Opsahl, I. Aubin, D. Septier, C. Chaussain-Miller, A. Boskey, and J.-L. Guenet
The authors describe the discovery of the fro/fro mouse as the first in vivo experimental evidence that sphingomyelin and its degradation play a crucial role in bone and dentin mineralization, suggesting the need for re-classification of the non-collagenous forms of osteogenesis imperfecta and dentin dysplasia.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 9-13. [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

CRITICAL REVIEWS IN ORAL BIOLOGY & MEDICINE:

S. Choi and J.N. Myers
This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms of oral carcinogenesis and the use of biologic therapy to specifically target molecules altered in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 14-32. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

Biological:

This is the first evidence that PDGF-BB is a mitogen for MEOE-3M and increases CSF-1 protein levels, predominantly by transcription. Elucidation of the cellular pathways that control CSF-1 expression may provide novel strategies for the regulation of enamel matrix formation.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 33-38. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF] [Appendix]

K. Tanimoto, T. Le, L. Zhu, J. Chen, J.D.B. Featherstone, W. Li, and P. DenBesten
Fluoride incorporation into the crystal lattice alters the crystal surface to enhance amelogenin binding, with no direct interactions between fluoride and amelogenin.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 39-44. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF] [Appendix]

J. Zhang, J. Zhu, P. Valverde, L. Li, S. Pageau, Q. Tu, R. Nishimura, T. Yoneda, P. Yang, W. Zheng, W. Ma, and J. Chen
Dlx5 promotes the expression of early markers of osteogenic differentiation and increases mineralization post-natally.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 45-50. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF] [Appendix]

T. Kurita-Ochiai, S. Seto, N. Suzuki, M. Yamamoto, K. Otsuka, K. Abe, and K. Ochiai
This is the first demonstration that butyric acid can induce apoptosis in gingival fibroblasts, possibly contributing to the destruction of gingival tissues in inflamed periodontal lesions.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 51-55. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

Clinical:

P. Papagerakis, H.-K. Lin, K.Y. Lee, Y. Hu, J.P. Simmer, J.D. Bartlett, and J.C.-C. Hu
The authors have identified an ARAI-causing point mutation in exon 1 of MMP20 in a proband with autosomal-recessive hypoplastic-hypomaturation amelogenesis imperfecta.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 56-59. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

A.N. Donaldson, B. Everitt, T. Newton, J. Steele, M. Sherriff, and E. Bower
The association between socio-economic status and the number of sound teeth in adults in the UK is partially explained by the pathway [SES -> barriers-to-dental-attendance -> dental-attendance-profile -> number-of-sound-teeth].

J Dent Res 2008 87: 60-64. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF] [Appendix]

I. Eli, D. Schwartz-Arad, and Y. Bartal
Before dental treatment (high or low on stress), patients’ ability to process information may be severely impaired.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 65-68. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

J.M. Broadbent, W.M. Thomson, and R. Poulton
The authors used longitudinal latent class analysis, a statistical method for identifying, summarizing, and describing the complex patterns of findings generated by life-course studies, to track caries rates across time.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 69-72. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF]

M.V. Vettore, M. doC. Leal, A.T. Leão, A.M. Monteiro da Silva, G.A. Lamarca, and A. Sheiham

J Dent Res 2008 87: 73-78. [Abstract] [Full Text] [Figures Only] [PDF] [Appendix]

E. Hattatoglu-Sönmez, L. Özcakar, Y. Gökce-Kutsal, E. Karaagaoglu, B. Demiralp, and H. Nazliel-Erverdi
There may be a link between elevated creatinine levels and periodontitis, and persons with high BMI scores seem to be at risk for periodontitis.

J Dent Res 2008 87: 79-83. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
