This is an excerpt from a videofluorographic recording that shows a normal subject eating 6 g of meat (the sequence shown in Fig. 1). The recording was made in the lateral projection and is shown in slow motion. Rhythmic motion of the soft palate is temporally linked to jaw motion. During processing and stage II transport, the soft palate rises as the jaw opens, but during swallowing, the soft palate rises during the intercuspal phase.
