Figure 3. Presence of the cnm gene in a population of S. mutans. HindIII-digested chromosomal DNA fragments from reference strains, including strain UA159, and several natural isolates in addition to strain Z1 were analyzed by Southern hybridization under high stringency conditions, with the cnm gene fragment as a probe. Asterisked are the cnm gene-positive strains. Binding assays of the strains to collagen/laminin were carried out as in Fig. 2. Data points represent the means of OD490 nm values ± standard deviation from 4 (collagen) or 3 (laminin) independent experiments.
