On the basis of the results presented in this study, it has been shown that the five barbiturates studied are excreted into the parotid saliva of the rat. Furthermore, it has been shown that the salivary excretion of these agents, as indicated by their S/P concentration ratios can be correlated with the lipid solubility as indicated by the L/W partition coefficient, and can be correlated to a lesser extent with the degree of drug ionization and plasma protein binding.
