The ultrastructure of the different layers of the gingival epithelium was studied in the new-born cat. The main characteristics of the junctional complexes include numerous hemidesmosomes at the germinative layer, numerous desmosomes at the stratum spinosum with bundles of tonofilaments, few tight junctions, and large intercellular spaces.
