Circadian Mitotic Rhythms in the Cervical Tissues of the Rat Maxillary Incisor

MICHAEL L. KIELY 1 and J. L. WILDE 1

1 Departments of Anatomy and Oral Biology, Loyola University School of Dentistry, Maywood, Illinois 60153, USA

A pronounced 24-hour fluctuation occurs in the mitotically active tissues of the rat maxillary incisor. High and low periods of activity were seen during the daytime as well as at night. A consistent increase in the number of mitotic figures occurred approximately four hours subsequent to a change in the ligh t-dark regimen.
