Strength Mechanisms of Dental Solder Joints

E. P. LAUTENSCHLAGER 1, B. C. MARKER 1, B. K. MOORE 1, and R. WILDES 1

1 Department of Biological Materials, Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois 60611, USA

Derivations of the triaxial state of stress and relative strain rate within the solder agree with the types of strengthening found in soft lead-tin solder butt joints. But for the dental gold casting alloys and hard gold solders tested, joint strengths were only influenced by porosity and not by size or rate of testing.
