Method for Evaluating Intrauterine Versus Genetic Influences on Craniofacial Anomalies

JOSEPH J. BONNTER 1

1 Department of Biochemistry, Laboratory of Developmental Biology, School of Dentistry, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California 90007, USA

A method has been proposed that enables discrimination between genetic and intrauterine influences within the etiology of teratogen-induced craniofacial anomalies. The experimental approach is the transplantation of embryos at the blastocyst stage from mouse strains that are either highly resistant or highly susceptible to cortisone-induced cleft lip and cleft palate formation into pseudopregnant foster mothers that are reciprocally either resistant or susceptible to the congenital birth defect.
