Utilization of Cation-Selective Membranes in the Study of Caries Formation

CRAIG A. HARRISON 1

1 American Dental Association Research Unit, National Bureau of Standards, Washington, DC 20234, USA

A caries mechanism was tested in a model experiment in which cation-permselective membranes were used to simulate the outer enamel-plaque layer. According to this theory, preferential diffusion of Ca2+ and H+ accelerates caries formation. The results support the theory and confirm that activity of Ca(OH)2 is of fundamental importance.
