A caries mechanism was tested in a model experiment in which cation-permselective membranes were used to simulate the outer enamel-plaque layer. According to this theory, preferential diffusion of Ca2+ and H+ accelerates caries formation. The results support the theory and confirm that activity of Ca(OH)2 is of fundamental importance.
