Frequency of Cleft Uvula and Submucous Cleft Palate in Patients with Down's Syndrome

S. A. SCHENDEL 1 and R. J. GORLIN 1

1 Division of Oral Pathology, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455, USA

Of 389 patients with Down's syndrome, 18 exhibited bifid uvula (4.63%) and 3 exhibited submucous cleft palate (0.77%). The hypothesis that cleft uvula and submucous cleft palate are micromanifestations of the more severe isolated cleft palate seems to be correct.
