SnHPO4 from the Reaction of Stannous Fluoride and Hydroxyapatite at a Low pH

K. G. NELSON 1 and C. A. BAINBRIDGE 1

1 College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455, USA

The reaction of stannous fluoride with hydroxyapatite at pH values less than 2 was studied. The X-ray diffraction powder pattern indicates that the major product is SnHPO4. Chemical analysis corroborated this finding and also indicated a minor amount of calcium and fluoride. SnHPO4 was synthesized and its X-ray pattern was compared with the reaction product.
