Mononuclear cell infiltration in biopsy specimens of leukoplakia, candidiasis, and lichen plans was assessed quantitatively. Differential counts of pyroninophilic and non-pyroninophilic round cells were related to the histological grades of leukoplakia and to other white lesions. An attempt was made to correlate these indexes to the incidence of carcinomatous transformation.
