Through ablation or stimulation of the superior cervical ganglia, and through the administration of drugs, evidence was obtained that parasympathetic activity causes an emptying of the palatine glands. The sympathetic division, particularly the
-adrenergic receptors, induces filling of the acinar cells. The sympathetic ganglia also aid synergistically in the emptying of the cell.
