Mechanism of Maxillary Growth in the Human Cyclops

R. A. LATHAM 1

1 Institute of Child Health, The University of Liverpool, Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool L12 2AP, England

Histological examination of two specimens of cyclopia indicated that maxillary growth was not hindered seriously by the absence of nasal structures. The maxillas showed normal patterns of bone deposition on posterior and superior surfaces, and appearances suggested that growth by acting against the adjacent masses of fatty tissue may be a basic factor in the mechanism that causes downward and forward displacement of the maxilla.
