Calcium ions enhanced the adsorption of salivary proteins by hydroxyapatite. Calcium probably acted in the protein-bound form by promoting the aggregation of proteins. Concentrations of calcium far below physiologic levels exerted maximal effects. Lowering the pH to 5 increased protein adsorption but abolished the effect of calcium. Relevance to the in vivo situation was examined.
