Analytic Procedures for Determination of Silver, Tin, Mercury, Copper, and Zinc in Dental Amalgams

THOMAS A. KENDALL 1, GLENDA H. SOHL 1, and RICHARD S. MATEER 1

1 College of Engineering, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky 40506, USA

Previous analytic procedures for dental amalgam alloys were simplified and improved in accuracy. Qualitative analysis was conducted by X-ray spectroscopy. Hg was determined quantitatively by weight loss in flowing argon distillation; Sn by gravimetric SnO2 and Ag as AgCl; Cu by weight gain on electrolysis; and Zn by gravimetric determination as ZnO.
