Some trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus cells in the rat showed minimal diminution of an orthodromically induced action potential within the refractory period of a directly induced action potential. This indicated that the directly stimulated cell is electrotonically coupled to a cell that is not refractory and is capable of receiving orthodromic stimuli.
