Microstructure of Amalgam Surfaces

TAKAO FUSAYAMA 1 and KENJI HAYASHI 1

1 Department of Operative Dentistry, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan

Amalgam surfaces were observed with a metallurgical and a scanning electron microscope. No significant differences in sizes of matrix crystal grains were found between the carved, burnished, and finished amalgams, or the superficial and inner layers. Numerous minute granular prominences eventually grew on the burnished surfaces.
