Psychologic Response to a Simulated Dental Procedure as a Function of Proximity to an Actual Dental Appointment

NORMAN L. CORAH 1 and RONALD J. SALMONSON 1

1 Department of Behavioral Science, School of Dentistry, State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York 14214

Dental patients were studied immediately before, after, or at a time unrelated to a dental procedure. Verbal and autonomic measures of responses to a video simulated dental restoration were obtained from 27 patients. Significant physiologic response was found in the "before" and "after" appointment groups, whereas greatest verbal report of discomfort occurred in the "before" group.
