Lipid was extracted from the calcifiable microorganism, Bacterionema matruchotii. The total lipid and its crude phospholipid and nonphospholipid fractions were examined for calcium hydroxyapatite nucleation in a metastable calcium phosphte solution. Apatite occurred with the total lipid and with the crude phospholopid. No crystallinity was detected with the nonphospholopid fraction.
