During a series of endodontic experiments on six rhesus monkeys, the floor of the pulp chamber was perforated in 21 teeth. These perforations were closed at intervals ranging from immediately to ten months afterward. Damage to the periodontium occurred in every case. However, the most severe destruction occurred when the perforations were not closed.
