The use of iron-platinum constituents in gold alloys can promote significant hardening. The alloys will solution heat-treat at temperatures used to fuse porcelains and precipitation-harden during slow air cooling. The hardening mechanism appears to involve the reaction: [See Equation in pdf file]. The precipitation reaction will vary with casting temperature.
