In Vitro Effects of Spice Extracts on Acid Formation and Enamel Solubility

BRIAN H. CLARKSON 1 and BASIL G. BIBBY 1

1 Eastman Dental Center, Rochester, New York 14603

Effects of a number of spice extracts on streptococcal acid formation and enamel decalcification were tested in vitro. Of those which produced appreciable reductions, five were tested further to determine the nature of the effective components. Results demonstrated that both inorganic and organic factors play a part in reducing enamel solubility.
