A comparative quantitative analysis was made of the mast cell population in Mikulicz's recurrent oral aphthae of varying duration with the mast cell population in normal mucosa. There was a reduction in the number of mast cells with increasing age of the lesion. The significance of these findings in relation to the etiology of the disease is discussed.
