Morphologic observation and EMG recordings of the lateral pterygoid muscle were performed on the cat. During repetitive mandibular movements, EMG activities of the lateral pterygoid muscle were recorded at the opening stage of the mandible. This muscle was shown to keep the articular disc in forward position during mandibular opening movement.
