Influence of Intermittent Treatment with Dietary Fluoride on Experimental Dental Caries

JAMES H. SHAW 1

1 Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts

Fluoride-supplemented diets were fed intermittently to caries-susceptible rats in postweaning assays. Fluoride supplements of 100 ppm for four 84-minute periods per day, 200 ppm for two 84-minute periods per day, 100 ppm for 24 hours on alternate days, and 150 ppm for 24 hours every third day were approximately as effective in reducing the caries prevalence as was 50 ppm, given continuously.
