Streptococcus isolated from human carious dentin can derive its carbon solely from a medium composed of a salt solution with added chondroitin sulfate or hyaluronic acid. The growth is inhibited by sodium fluoride. It is suggested that various dentin results from streptococcal hydrolysis of dentin polysaccharides.
