Effect of Pilocarpine on the Oxygen Tension of Rat Submaxillary Glands

Polarographic methods were employed to study the effect of pilocarpine hydrochloride on the oxygen tension of the submaxillary gland of the rat. It was observed that 0.05 mg was the lowest dose that would induce salivation without systemic side effects. It was also observed that this dosage level resulted in a 50% reduction in the oxygen tension of the submaxillary gland within 14 minutes. The functional activity of the submaxillary gland apparently results in a lowering of the gland's oxygen tension.
