Comparative Characterization of Periodontal Pocket, Salivary, and Fecal Streptococci

RODNEY F. SMITH 1 and HOWARD L. BODILY 1

1 Temple University Dental School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Division of Laboratories, California State Department of Public Health, Berkeley, California

Plate counts were made with periodontal pocket debris from 24 normal and abnormal subjects. Total cocci were successfully enumerated by using selective mediums without the use of weighed debris, indicating the uniform mixture of this group in the crevicular material. Pocket streptococci were characterized and compared with other strains of salivary and fecal origin.
