Investigation Concerning the Solubility of Dental Cements

K. EICHNER 1, E. P. LAUTENSCHLAGER 1, and M. VON RADNOTH 1

1 Department of Biological Materials, Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois

Solubility tests of eight dental cements showed that the rate of solubility can be fitted to a mathematical expression that indicates that solubility decreases exponentially in time. Solubility was increased by continually presenting fresh liquid, unsaturated with solute, to the cement-water interface. A liquid absorption test was developed to give an additional criterion for the life of dental cements.
