Lyophilyzed 19-day-old rat fetuses, implanted next to the periosteum, induced bone growth in mature rats. The initially immature bone matured after three weeks to the pseudohaversian bone peculiar to the rat. The induced bone remained stable for 12 weeks. With the exception of one contaminated specimen, there was no foreign-body reaction.
