Fifteen rats, 10 to 400 days old, were given injections of tritiated thymidine. The percentage of labeled cells in the periodontal ligament of the maxillary first molar decreases with age. Functional occlusion reduces the numbers of cells synthesizing deoxyribonucleic acid.
