Uptake of Calcium, Strontium, and Barium by the Surfaces of Bone Powder and Bone Mineral

JOSEPH SAMACHSON 1, JOHN DENNIS 1, and RICHARD FOWLER 1

1 Metabolic Section, Veterans Administration Hospital, Hines, Illinois, and University of Illinois, College of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois

The uptake of carrier-free 133Ba by bone powder and anorganic bone equals or exceeds the uptakes of 47Ca and 85Sr. Bone matrix discriminates in favor of tracer Ba more than bone mineral does, although about 1% of the mineral surface shows a preferential uptake of 133Ba compared with 47Ca.
