The external pterygoid muscles in man and in the pig show anatomical separations between the superior and inferior heads. The insertion of the superior head into the substance of the interarticular disc and of the inferior head into the anterior portion of the neck of the capitulum, as well as the presence of fascial separations and occasionally blood vessels, suggest a degree of functional independence of these two muscle fasciculi. This hypothesis is currently the subject of experimentation.
