Segments of mandibles from 11-day mouse embryos were cultivated in vitro; tooth germs were not present at this stage. Incisors formed in explants of the anterior part of the mandible and molars in the posterior part. It is concluded that a morphogenetic field potential difference of tooth development is present in the mandible at this period.
