The 32 albino rats studied were kept under different conditions of housing and feeding to ascertain the relative values of each component of attrition. It was found that the sum total of attrition and eruption remained the same under these various conditions, indicating that the various components compensated for each other. It appears that eruption is a primary factor and that attrition has to remove the extruded tooth substance for the survival of the individual.
