The results show that the carbohydrate moiety of rat submaxillary gland mucin is rapidly synthesized from injected labeled glucose. The metabolic processes involved are slowed down in the alloxan diabetic rat. These observations constitute the basis for a further study of the synthesis of mucin in the submaxillary gland of the rat.
