A study of the midline region of the palate was made on coronal sections from 30 human palates, representing an age range of 7 weeks of fetal life to 15 years.
The median region was occupied by a circular, fiber-free region often associated with epithelial fusion remnants and bounded by vertically coursing fibers. Evidence related this structure developmentally with the epithelial remnants and a poor blood supply.
A palatal raphe was not found, and continued use of the term "raphe" does not appear to be justified.
