Silver and cholinesterase technics show that fibers of the hypoglossal nerve extend across the median plane of the cat's tongue. Degeneration experiments demonstrate that these fibers terminate in motor end plates on the intrinsic musculature. This appears to be the first example of transmedian neuromuscular innervation.
