In this pilot study, there was approximately 80 percent agreement between cytologic findings and biopsy diagnoses. The least agreement was seen during weeks 15 to 21 of DMBA paintings, when high agreement was considered most crucial. The two cytologists agreed exactly on only 59 percent of the cytology smears examined, which may be attributed in part to lack of common background in training and to lack of standardization of diagnostic criteria in hamster cytology.
