Pseudomonads in Human Saliva

VERA L. SUTTER 1, VALERIE HURST 1, and ALBERT O. J. LANDUCCI 1

1 School of Dentistry, University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, San Francisco, California

Saliva from 350 individuals was examined for the presence of pseudomonads capable of growth at 37° C. Ps. aeruginosa was found in 23 (6.6 per cent), Ps. putida in 6 (1.7 per cent), and Ps. fluorescens in 2 (0.6 per cent). Ps. aeruginosa appeared to be resident in the mouths of most individuals from whom it was isolated, whereas the other two species appeared to be transient.

Three selective media were compared for isolation of pseudomonads. Detection was found easiest on cetrimide agar because of the ready fluorescence of the colonies under ultraviolet light.

It is suggested that only sterile materials be used to stimulate saliva collected for studies of oral microflora.
