Relationship of Dental Caries and Stress: Concentrations in Teeth as Revealed by Photoelastic Tests

M. L. LEHMAN 1 and M. L. MEYER 1

1 The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England

The problem of the initiation and propagation of the early caries lesion has heen investigated. Photoelastic tests have shown that mechanical stresses in the teeth are contributory factors, e.g., at contact points between adjacent teeth or between natural teeth and parts of artificial appliances like clasps. The spread of caries along the amelodential junction has also been studied in relation to the stresses existing at this junction.
