To compare the edge and bulk strengths of powdered gold with other fillings, the maximum bending, bending strength, and apparent density were determined.
Powdered gold B was slightly superior to powdered gold A in average, though the difference was not statistically significant. The powdered silver was much inferior to both of them. The edge strength of metallic restorative material is considered to be represented by the maximum bending, and the bulk strength by the bending strength. The edge strength of powdered gold was half that of gold foil and more than twice that of amalgam. The bulk strength of powdered gold was approximately 40 per cent lower than those of gold foil, amalgam, and acrylic fillings at the same level. The apparent or relative density of powdered gold was 10 per cent lower than that of foil.
