Using customary sensitivity testing procedures, the inhibitory effect of erythrosin on a number of different micro-organisms was described. Erythrosin is a constituent of disclosing wafers, a preparation not infrequently used in studies of the oral cavity. The potential effect of this substance in modifying the oral microbiota, and the misconceptions which might result with respect to various elements of the total microbial population, were cited.
