Incidence of Bruxism

GEORGES R. REDING 1, WILLIAM C. RUBRIGHT 1, and STUART O. ZIMMERMAN 1

1 Department of Psychiatry and Zoller Memorial Dental Clinic, University of Chicago, Chicago

A questionnaire survey of the incidence of bruxism was conducted among students of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (age 3 to 17) and among new undergratuate and graduate students of the same university (age 16 to 36).

The percentage of current bruxists reported in all age groups was around 5 per cent. Among laboratory school students there was a history of bruxism in 15 per cent.

The difference between the percentages of male and female bruxists did not reach statistical significance.

A statistically significant association was found between current bruxism on the one side and either current bruxism or a history of bruxism in blood relatives on the other side.

A significant decrease with age in the percentage of current bruxists was found among the age groups 3 to 17 years.

The reliability of the method and the validity and possible interpretations of the data are discussed.
