A method has been presented for measuring the thermal diffusion through dental restorative materials. The results corroborate the work of Braden,6 who showed that the thermal diffusivity through amalgam is quite rapid. The data obtained also substantiate is dependent on its thickness. Cavity varnishes, when used in the normal thicknesses employed by the dentist, did not reduce the thermal diffusion.
The optimum thickness required to provide adequate thermal insulation, and yet maintain the strength necessitated for certain operative procedures, remains to be determined.
