The relationship between heredity and environment in the formation of the phenotype and the importance of these factors in the production of gingival abnormalities were discussed. An attempt was made to classify such abnormalities, and some of the problems involved have been described.
Results of a preliminary investigation of a family affected by hereditary generalized gingival fibromatosis were presented, and it was emphasized that further work is needed to determine the nature of the underlying biochemical defect.
