Hardening susceptibilities of ternary alloy systems present in commercially available dental alloys were studied. The systems gold-platinum-iron, gold-platinum-indium, and gold-platinum-tin were found to exhibit a significant hardening response in a limited temperature range between 538° to 621° C. (1,000° to 1,150° F.). Evidence of precipitation or subgrain formation was obtained for each system in an overaged condition; that is, after treatment at higher aging temperatures.
