Structural Changes in the Incisors of Cortisone-Treated Rats

GÖRAN ANNEROTH 1 and GUNNAR BLOOM 1

1 Department of Dental Histopathology, Royal School of Dentistry, and Department of Cell Research, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden

Maxillar and mandibular incisors were studied in rats treated with cortisone. This hormone has pronounced effects on the normal development of these teeth. Histopathologic changes were observed in pulp, predentin, and dentin. They were characterized by disorganization and lowered differentiation of the odontoblasts, increased number of cells in the pulp, and excessive formation of a bone-like substance containing cellular and vascular inclusions. The changes have features in common with those observed in C- and A-avitaminosis experiments in various animals.
