Minimum Number of Oral Microorganisms Needed To Initiate Growth in Culture Media

LOUIS I. GROSSMAN 1

1 School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

It appears that, of certain strains of microorganisms, only 1 organism is needed to initiate growth in culture medium. The organisms tested grew better in trypticase soy broth with 0.1 per cent agar and in brain-heart infusion broth with 0.1 per cent agar than in thioglycolate medium or in cooked meat medium. Different strains of the same species of microorganisms grew better in one medium than in another. The results obtained with and without sonification of the culture suspension were some-what variable.
